Electric Coffin on Wheels
On October 11th of 2022, I was on a call with my friend Louis. We were discussing some potential projects and how they were all pretty dangerous, and the topic of a literal coffin on wheels came up. Halloween was right around the corner and I thought it would be a fun and festive way to get around on the holiday. We both had our own ideas for how we would do it, but Louis's would undoubtedly take too long to be done before this Halloween. I was confident that if I wanted to I could get a coffin doing at least 20mph by Halloween, so naturally Louis challenged me to prove it. And that's how this one starts, with a bet of sorts.
The real challenge with this one was time. In total, I had 20 days. A few of which near the beginning would be spent traveling home for my sister's birthday, and along the way, I had to keep up with my academic course load. So I got to work... on homework. Not the most glamorous step, but a very important one for this time management challenge! I executed my plan to get as ahead as possible before I left for home. Then, I spent a few days prioritizing spending time with family and worked on the research and design in my downtime. When I got back, I had 2 weeks left and a plan. My whole idea was to turn the coffin into a giant electric longboard. So I fashioned a rudimentary "looong" board deck to make the ride more stable out of some thicker dimensional lumber and affixed it to the bottom face of the coffin. From there, I disassembled an electric longboard, and reassembled the trucks, wheels, and electronics onto the "deck." Once those were mounted and worked properly, I assembled the rest of the coffin around it. I gave it a paint job and it was time for the speed test. It clocked in at 27mph on the remote and 24mph on a speedometer app on my phone! I did it! And now I have "I told you so" privileges with my friend! It was a blast to ride around campus in my zombie costume, and while it was shortly disassembled, who knows if it'll come back to life one of these upcoming Halloweens!?
